Zeke’s beer had a quarter inch left and it was warm. A good time to refresh. The short walk to the kitchen gave him a chance to shake off the heebie-jeebies the squirrel sighting gave him. Zeke really hated those things. Not enough to trap or poison them, but enough to pitch pebbles at them when he had the chance.

“Fuckin’ varmints,” he’d say under breath his breath in the worst Bill Murray impression.

Zeke liked the city because of the lack of squirrels. The concrete and asphalt kept them down to a minimum. He only got the sweats when he visited the city parks with friends. Hordes of the fluffy beady-eyed nut biters congregated in the parks. One was bound to sneak up on him. Zeke would pocket a handful of pebbles on his way in. If they did try to take him, he’d at least be armed.

Disney cartoons made them seem like cute critters without a malicious bone in their tiny bodies. Zeke didn’t see them that way. “Squirrels have dead dolls eyes,” he’d tell his friends. “They look into you like the Devil selecting souls. Then there are the hands. You might call them paws, but paws don’t have fingers. Fingers that grasp the berries.”

Zeke’s friends often dismissed this as his attempt at quirkiness. Nothing else about Zeke struck them out of the ordinary. If anything, Zeke could be downright boring. They saw a man that lacked any kind of obvious ambition or interests. No one saw where he lived. His friends knew him from work. He made the odd comment that made the others laugh, and he wasn’t completely awkward in social situations. That was enough to want him around.

Zeke really did want to get over his fear of squirrels. Others called it “irrational,” but they were never brutally attacked by the little bushy-tailed fuckers. When trees began to green, the flashes of the attack became more frequent.

He was eleven when it happened. It was Spring. The trees were full of pale green leaves. The park moved with play and festivities. Zeke was chucking sticks for his terrier, Jake. They were at the tree-line when Jake froze in mid-fetch. His snout pointed into the woods. Then with a lurch, Jake took off into the trees.

Zeke could see the dog dashing from tree to tree. He turned sharply and dashed back the way we came. The dog never seemed happier. Zeke laughed at the chase. The squirrel dashed from tree to tree. It seemed to enjoy the chase as much as Jake.

Then things turned wrong. The squirrel made a beeline toward Zeke. The scruffy body of his dog bounded behind the squirrel. Both were running at top speed. Zeke froze in place. The squirrel and dog would certainly pass by him. It would get a couple of feet from Zeke and then dart left or right, wouldn’t it?

That isn’t what happened though. The black-eyed little bastard ran up Zeke’s bare leg. Its tiny claws dug into him as it clamored into Zeke’s short pants. Before Zeke could panic, Jake made to follow the squirrel. Ass over teakettle, the three fell to the ground. To bystanders, it looked as if a boy and his dog were playing. For Zeke, it was a life or death struggle.

Zeke felt the squirrel doing loops around his hips. Meanwhile, Jake buried his nose in one of Zeke’s pant legs and snapped furiously at the squirrel. Zeke screamed, “Don’t bite ‘em! Don’t bite ‘em!”

Jake finally managed to get his muzzled clenched onto the squirrel’s tail. The squirrel in its panic, used its tiny pointy fingers to latch onto the only thing at hand: Zeke’s berries. Zeke’s pleas of “Don’t bite ‘em!” changed to shrill screams of terror. Suddenly, the entire park stared at the boy and his dog.

“That dog is attacking the kid,” someone shouted. Zeke’s dad ran to the trio and quickly pulled Jake off of Zeke. No one every saw the squirrel bolt away. Zeke stopped claiming the squirrel’s part only after many years of family ridicule.

Little Girl paced the window sill. Her tail flicked anxiously. Something outside the window had her attention. Probably a passing leaf, Zeke thought, or squirrel. All Zeke was certain of is that if he looked, he would see nothing. Little Girl was easily entertained for hours by things that long since passed the window. For Zeke, Little Girl’s whip tail was endlessly amusing. Content in the thought that nothing was there, Zeke took another sip of beer and continued to watch the shadows of leaves dance on the wall just beyond the window and Little Girl’s tail.

This Saturday afternoon was warm like a proper Seattle July afternoon. It was a strange summer. Last week, the temperatures barely broke the Seventies. Today, the mercury was passing the Eighty degree mark. Zeke tipped back his bottle one more time to salute this proper July afternoon knowing that next week the whacked-out weather would probably shift to a blizzard. Today, though, Zeke was going to drink beer, read, and bask in the warmth.

It wasn’t long before the quiet afternoon and beer colluded to put Zeke to sleep. His hand slumped and the book dropped to his lap while his chin rested on his chest. His mind turned from the story he was just reading to a place just below waking thoughts. Dreaming for Zeke was a lot like trying to tune into a channel just at the edge of reception. Colors are faded and the image is filtered through static, and sound echoed from the inside of a trash can.

“Zeke.” It was a distant voice broken by static and interference. Zeke turned to locate the source. He couldn’t see anything except the field he was standing in and the tree-line ahead of him. The forest was dense. A steady breeze and high sun cast shadows that moved deep into the wood. It was impossible for Zeke to tell the difference between a moving object from a trick of light.

“Zeke, what are you waiting for? Come along.” The voice was definitely female and made a little clearer by a breeze blowing towards him through the forest. Zeke took a step toward the tree-line, but stopped short. From the woods to his left, an echoing crack like a tree trunk snapping sounded.

“Don’t wait in the open, you idiot. It’s coming.”

Zeke’s heart raced with panic. His feet felt buried.

“Dammit! Move or die!”

The treetops to his left started to tremble faster than the neighboring trees. Zeke turned to his right. When he tried to lift his right leg, Zeke just fell to the ground. Looking back over is shoulder, he saw to treetops nearer the tree-line shaking more. The snapping and creaking sounds were getting louder, nearer. Deep in the shadows, Zeke started to make out a shape. Too large to be real, he thought. His chest heaved and bucked harder. Zeke kicked his legs trying to get them under him so he could bolt towards the voice.

The book tumbled to the floor with a loud dead thud. Little Girl was more agitated than usual. She chattered at something in the trees. In his waking haze, Zeke thought he saw a squirrel sized person. Before his eyes focused, the blur fell from a limb. Little Girl followed with her eyes as it disappeared from Zeke’s view. Convinced that he saw what he saw, Zeke popped out of his chair and stumbled to the window.

Scuttling across the ground to a neighboring tree was a gray squirrel. It’s tail twitched in all directions as it made its ascent up the trunk. The spiraled around the trunk and disappeared. Little Girl stared wide-eyed at the tree expecting that at any moment it to reappear.

“Dammit, Little Girl. You ruined a perfectly good nap.” Zeke snatched Little Girl from the window sill and plopped her in her favorite spot on the couch. She just glared at him and silently added the comment “Kiss my ass, Zeke” by licking her butt.
